Musar and Jewish Veganism

Geoffrey D. Claussen, “Musar and Jewish Veganism,” in Jewish Veganism and Vegetarianism: Studies and New Directions, ed. Jacob Labendz and Shmuly Yanklowitz (Albany: SUNY Press, 2019), 195–216.
In this book chapter, I explore how wisdom gleaned from the Musar movement may inspire and enrich Jewish vegan practices. I focus on approaches to loving-kindness, compassion, empathy, and self-restraint found in the writings of some of the most prominent figures in the early generations of the Musar movement: Rabbi Simḥah Zissel Ziv of Kelm (1824-1898), Rabbi Natan Tzevi Finkel of Slobodka (1849-1927), and Rabbi Yeruham Ha-Levi Levovitz of Mir (1873?-1936).
